The Very Good Series

by Pastor Aaron Smith on November 29th, 2011

This teaching series, Very Good, attempts to recover the God-declared "very good" to our marriages and our parenting. No matter how many years you've been married, how many kids you have or how old, Very Good Marriages and Very Good Parenting is for you!

Christ came to save sinners.  This is most certainly true.  We will celebrate this in a grand way as we journey through Advent to Christmas!  Yet, while Christ came to save sinners, He also came for all of creation.  Paul writes, “For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.  And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, grown inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.  For in this hope we were saved.”  (Romans 8.22-24)

As we hear the wondrous story of the Lord coming to earth for us, we see that He has come for all His creation.  His coming, His death, and His resurrection accomplished salvation for all who trust in Him and ensured the renewing of creation.  This renewing will be completed on the Final Day.  And this is how the Lord original designed things to be: human creatures trusting in their Creator for everything and creation existing in a perfect and pristine state.  After all, what our Creator created was “good.” At the end of Genesis 1, the Creator creates man and woman, blesses them, and calls them to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it…And God saw everything that He has made, and behold, it was very good.”  Very good.  Man and woman coming together, being fruitful and multiplying.  This our Creator calls “very good.”  What was very good, because of human sin, became corrupt and caused creation’s groaning.  Yet, with the first coming of Christ which has guaranteed His second and last coming, we have reason to celebrate Christmas with the confession that what was done at the beginning was indeed “very good.”

So, with this confession, I introduce a series for 2012 called “Very Good.”  The Very Good Series will consist of two parts: Very Good Parenting and Very Good Marriages.  As our Creator established the family and deemed all He made very good, we will honor that with nights dedicated to parenting and marriages.  We will seek to make our parenting and our marriages very good by taking time to reflect, learn, grow, be challenged, and encouraged.

This will kick off on Friday, January 27th at 7pm with the first Very Good Parenting session.  For about one hour, we will gather in the sanctuary to look at the topic of Parenting Models.  The following Friday, February 3rd will be the first Very Good Marriages session, which will cover Love Languages.  Childcare will be provided, but I encouraged attendees to find a babysitter themselves.  After the session, go out and discuss the topic together or with other couples.

God is good and His creation is good.  While we groan, awaiting the coming of the Savior, put your hand to the plow and make your 2012 very good!
